Golden Milk Latte: Immune Boosting and Delicious

Follow

A few years ago, while traveling in India, I was introduced to an Ayurvedic drink called Golden Milk. This warm, creamy tea is a staple in the 5000 year old health practice of Ayurveda.

Golden Milk is an immune boosting, anti-inflammatory tea that can aid in sleep, and digestion, given its main ingredient, turmeric. Now I know you’re probably making a face, trying to figure out how an ingredient that’s used in curry and other Indian dishes can be put in a tea. But, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

Turmeric Flashback: Growing up, my grandmother used to make a concoction of warm water, turmeric, lemon juice and honey for us to drink anytime we got sick. At the time, it tasted horrible but killed any germs that lingered in our bodies. Now, I crave turmeric and savor every sip- amazing how your taste buds change over time!

Golden Milk is a very flavorful and cozy drink, especially as the weather cools down. I wouldn’t be surprised if shows up as one of Starbucks specialty drinks in the future.

Golden Milk is normally taken at night because of its soothing and calming effects. But you can enjoy it anytime. Here are more amazing benefits:

  • Boosts immunity (helps rid your body of any colds/coughs)
  • Detoxes your body
  • Clears your skin and makes your skin glow
  • Strengthens your hair and nails
  • Breaks down fat cell- aids in weight loss
  • Helps relieve joint pain

GOLDEN MILK RECIPE:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of milk (whatever type you prefer- almond, coconut, dairy, etc…)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric*
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of black pepper (this increases the absorption of turmeric)
  • Piece of fresh, peeled ginger root or ¼ tsp of ginger powder (may have a strong taste so use sparingly)
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey**, agave or maple syrup to taste (optional)
  • Pinch of cardamom (optional)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of instant coffee (if you want it caffeinated)

* Turmeric may stain appliances or countertops, so take caution. The stain is not permanent and can be cleaned with a bit of baking soda and water.

** Never put honey into a hot beverage or heat up honey. Heated above 104F, honey has a molecular change, reducing its health benefits.

Instructions

  1. Blend all ingredients until smooth
  2. Pour into a small sauce pan and heat for 3-5 minutes over medium heat until hot (do not boil).
  3. Froth the milk to create a latte (optional)
  4. Allow to cool down a bit.
  5. Add honey or agave if you'd like.
  6. Drink and enjoy.
